computation Skills:
Computing accurately impacts all areas of math achievement and is important to meeting Common Core's rigorous standards. This year MBS is focusing on computation skills during our math block. The 1st & 2nd trimester 5th graders will be working on whole number computation. During the 3rd trimester we will work on fraction computation.
Whole number Computation
ADDITION:
Students must use traditional methods to solve whole number multi-digit addition problems.
SUBTRACTION:
Students must use traditional methods to solve whole number multi-digit subtraction problems.
Subtraction w/Regrouping-Trade First:
MULTIPLICATION:
Students in 5th grade need to use the US Traditional method for solving multi-digit multiplication problems. Students need to accurately solve 3 x 1, 4 x 1, 2 x 2, 3 x 2, 4 x 2 & 3 x 3 digit multiplication problems.
DIVISION:
Students in 5th grade may use area models, partial quotients or traditional division methods to solve multi-digit division problems. Students need to accurately solve 3/1, 4/1, 4/2 digit division.
Fraction Computation:
Students in 5th grade may use area models, repeated addition, number lines or traditional computation methods to solve fraction computation problems. Fifth grade students are expected to be able to add, subtract & multiply fractions & mixed numbers. They are expected to be able to divide a unit fraction by a whole number & divide a whole number by a unit fraction.
